Gino Pozzo, Managing Director And Legal Owner Of Watford Football Club

Gino Pozzo is a Sardinian Italian who has been the managing director and legal owner of Watford Football Club since June 2012. He also acts as a member of the club’s board of directors. He was born in Sassari, Sardinia, Italy, on 25 January 1952. Pozzo is a business management graduate from the University of Sassari and has worked in different roles at his family’s company before becoming a football club director in 1990.

Gino Pozzo is the former president of the Italian Footballers’ Association (AIC), an organization that represents professional footballers working outside their clubs. The AIC is an umbrella organization for players not defined by their clubs or unions, and its members include Gianfranco Zola and Gennaro Gattuso, amongst others. During his time as president, Pozzo clashed with Claudio Ranieri, head coach at Juventus, over player contracts. Ranieri had signed several players to long-term deals with Juventus but only received one-year contracts from Pozzo once he became president. After failing to reach an agreement on these contracts, Pozzo resigned as AIC president in July 2012 but remained involved with unpaid positions within the organization until February 2013, when he resigned from all unpaid positions within AIC after being refused access to information relating to player transfers by Ranieri’s successor Luciano Spalletti.

Gino Pozzo took over as chairman in June 2012 after the previous chairman Laurence Bassini resigned. He had been a board member since 1994, when he was appointed a director at 26, with his first post as the club’s commercial director. In June 2013, Pozzo became president and managing director after Bassini decided to step down from both positions to concentrate on his role as chairman of Fondi Sport Italia.

He is credited with turning Watford into a successful club, with their first promotion to English football’s top division in 50 years, coming under his tenure in April 2014. Pozzo has overseen significant changes to the club’s infrastructure since taking over, including building a new training ground, stadium, and academy. He has also attracted new players to Watford, including some previously playing abroad, including Gianfranco Zola, Malky Mackay, Gianluca Vialli, and Mauro Zarate.
